Happy Birthday!

May 30, 2010

So.  This is it.  My inaugural sonicgypsy blog post.  It’s something I’ve had on my want-to-do list for a long time, but you know how it is…  “things” just get in the way, months and years pass, and still nothing is done about it.  Until the morning you wake up, realize that enough is finally enough and that all the little life and time contraints that have been given a priority ranking will just have to settle for 2nd or 3rd or 10th place and be ok with that.

That’s what brings me to this happy birth day.  My purpose for it?  I love classical music.  Actually I like all good music, any genre (well, maybe not hard-core country or death/thrash/doom metal – sorry country and metal fans), but I love classical music.  It engages me more than anything else out there and turns me into a babbling ball of excitement at the mere mention of the subject.

However, sadly, I find myself an anomaly of sorts, a rebel crusader, especially among my generation and younger, most of whom didn’t have the early exposure I got (THANKS mom and dad!!) and therefore consider classical music to be antiquated, undecipherable, and irrelevant.  That’s a different topic though.

In the quest to make my understanding and appreciation of this landscape of classical music as full as I can, I spend a lot of time listening, reading, learning, gathering what I can from wherever I can get it.  For what it’s worth, this blog will hopefully serve as a much-needed container to store all the tidbits and treasures I find in my wanderings.  And if others want to come along for the exploration… well, that would be great.  Maybe we can get new people excited about this music too.
